As congratulations pour in for Prof. Benard Odoh’s appointment as Vice Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, here is a key takeaway. Prof. Odoh to many Ebonyians is a politician of repute who has been one of the voices calling for better governance in the State. And as the gubernatorial candidate of APGA in the last election in the State, Prof. Odoh is a household name. But away from the political scene, he is a seasoned scholar who has devoted his time in contributing his quota in the education sector.
In Ebonyi, politics has become a career for many, with some individuals having no other pursuits or affiliations beyond politics. However, Prof. Odoh’s accomplishment demonstrates the importance of having multiple passions and expertise.
His story teaches us that having a life beyond politics allows for a healthier approach to public service. It prevents the “do-or-die” mentality that often plagues politicians who see politics as their sole source of identity and livelihood.
So, as we are extending our heartfelt congratulations to Prof. Odoh, we should be encouraged to build successful careers and establish ourselves in our respective fields. This enables us to serve others without desperation and maintain our integrity.
Just imagine if Prof. Odoh did not have a career, he would have been loitering around Government House hustling for urgent political 2k. But he has distinguished himself in his field and today he is celebrated as the 7th VC of Nnamdi Azikiwe University and a worthy ambassador of the State. So, be the Odoh that has a career and strives to be the best there, and that can answer the call of his people at anytime; and not an Odd that takes politics as his career.
Be Odoh and not Odd!
