The Chief Medical Director, Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital, Awka Dr. Joe Akabuike says there is no reason any of their morticians will be interested in cutting and selling parts of corpses when the hospital buried 300 abandoned corpses in December 2024.

Dr. Akabuike who was speaking on “Governance Unplugged”, an online TV current affairs programme on Anambra First, said the video that recently made the rounds on social media where their staff was accused of mutilating the body of a deceased person placed in their morgue is the handiwork of a misinformed mischief maker.

According to Dr Akabuike, the deceased who was an accident victim with head injury and broken limbs was brought to the hospital by a Good Samaritan after being referred and rejected by other hospitals.

He said the woman after many attempts to save her life died barely two hours of being rushed to the hospital but was deposited in the in the hospital’s morgue.

He further explained that after two months of being in the morgue, the family of the deceased came for the corpse and discovered some missing parts from the injuries of the accident and raised alarm but were told the true situation of things by the Servicom which they agreed and later took the deceased to but buried but after three weeks, they went public with the incident and arrested all the morticians who were later released by the management of the hospital.

According to him, the Police is on investigation and stated categorically that the hospital will never let any crime go unpunished.

He also stated that the hospital will take legal actions against the publisher of video for defamation and wondered why the person that made the video was asking the hospital to compensate the family of deceased when in fact the matter should be treated as a criminal matter if the accusations were true.
