Anambra Government Begins Talks with Streetlight Contractors Over ₦900m Debt

The Anambra State Government has commenced reconciliation talks with streetlight contractors and the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) over an outstanding debt of ₦900.7 million.

The debt, dating back to 2022, covers the supply of Automotive Gas Oil (diesel) used to power generators for streetlighting across the state.

Despite fulfilling their duties and returning the generators as directed by the Soludo administration, contractors and oil marketers say they have yet to receive payment for the services rendered.

Speaking in Awka, Chairman of IPMAN’s Enugu Depot Community, Chinedu Anyaso, stated that about 70 of their members are affected.

He lamented the financial hardship faced by the contractors, many of whom are indebted to banks and suppliers due to the unpaid sum.

He noted that several appeals and official letters have been sent to the state government since late 2023, but no concrete action had been taken until now.

He warned that failure to settle the debt could lead to the suspension of services in the state, disrupting key infrastructure support.

In response, Anambra’s Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Community Affairs, TonyCollins Nwabunwanne, confirmed that the government has begun reviewing all invoices to verify the claims.

He assured that the administration is committed to transparency and will settle verified debts promptly.

The ongoing dialogue is seen as a step forward, but contractors remain cautious, urging swift resolution to avoid further economic strain on their businesses.
