… calls for urgent government intervention
To address the devastating impact of erosion in his community, the member representing Njikoka Two Constituency and Deputy Majority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly, Dr Jude Akpua, has led the MD of the Anambra State Erosion Watershed and Climate Change Agency, ANSEWCCA, Professor Phil Eze, to a severely-damaged gully erosion site at Umugama, Ire village in Abba, Njikoka Local Government Area.
Njikoka Local Government officials were part of the site visit; aimed at bringing government attention to the life-threatening erosion crisis in the community.
Dr Akpua, who expressed deep concern over the environmental threat, called on the state government to urgently intervene.
The lawmaker emphasized that the environmental challenge requires immediate and strategic responses to prevent further loss of life and property.
Also speaking during the visit, a resident of the area, Mr Ferdinand Okafor, decried the devastating reach of the erosion, stating that more than 24 households have been forced to abandon their homes.
He emotionally recalled a tragic incident last year when two children aged 9 and 11 lost their lives due to the gully’s expansion, and further noted that the erosion has stretched into neighbouring communities like Ifitedunu, posing a great environmental threat.
